Couples therapy at Rising Rose Relational Therapy is structured, skills-based work with Anjelica M. Nelson, M.Ed, LPCC-S, IMFT-S, by video for couples anywhere in Ohio. It starts with a free 15-minute fit call. Next is a couples assessment: an 80-minute joint session, then a session with each partner. You get a map of your friendship, your conflict, and the shared life you're building, and weekly sessions build the skills to change them. Marriage counseling and couples therapy are the same work here.

The work

Structured couples therapy

Couples work is structured and skills-based: a clear assessment, a map of the relationship, and tools you can actually use — not open-ended venting.

Friendship

Knowing each other again. Fondness, attention, and the small turns toward one another that keep a relationship alive.

Conflict

How you start a hard talk, how you repair, and how you compromise — skills you can actually use.

Shared life

Rituals, roles, goals, and the life you are building on purpose, not by accident.

The same fight

You can script each other’s lines. You want a map, and skills you can actually use.

Discernment

One of you is leaning out. The work is to get clarity — stay, leave, or postpone — without using therapy as a stall.

Premarital

You want to build friendship, conflict resolution, and a shared life on purpose. Six sessions, prepaid, with a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in the first couples therapy session?

The first session is an 80-minute joint session. It starts the couples assessment: who is in the room, what the pattern is, and what you each want to change. After that, each partner has one session on their own, under the written no-secrets policy. Questionnaires are used when they are clinically relevant, and Gottman couples assessments are offered. Then you get a map of the relationship that becomes the plan for weekly work.

How long does couples therapy take?

There is no set number of sessions. It depends on what you're working on. The assessment comes first, and the map from it becomes the plan for weekly 50- or 80-minute sessions. Premarital counseling is different: it is a six-session plan.

What if my partner won't come to couples therapy?

Couples therapy needs both partners to choose it, and no one should be pressured to attend. If your partner is unsure rather than unwilling, discernment counseling is built for that situation. If you want to work on your side of the relationship on your own, individual therapy for adults focuses on your relationships and the role you play in them. Mention your situation on the fit call.

Is online couples therapy private?

Sessions take place by video using SimplePractice, from a private room you choose. Because the practice is cash-pay, no insurer is billed and no diagnosis has to be sent to one unless you choose to submit a superbill. Please keep health and relationship details out of the contact form and email, and save them for the fit call or the intake paperwork.

Do we have to be married?

No. Couples work here includes premarital counseling, marriage counseling, affair recovery, discernment counseling, the transition to parenthood, and high-conflict co-parenting. LGBTQ+ couples are welcome.

When is couples therapy not the right first step?

If you are afraid of your partner, or there has been violence or control, joint sessions may not be safe. Say so privately on the fit call, or contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or thehotline.org. This practice is not a crisis service. In an emotional crisis, call or text 988. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Both partners also need to be physically in Ohio for every session.

Do you take insurance?

No. Rising Rose is cash-pay. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and you can request a superbill to submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See fees for details.
